Amateur Radio DisAbility Net

Change in Scheduling

I am making a change in scheduling for my amateur radio DisAbility Net. Originally the net was for 2 PM EDT, which is 18:00 GMT on Saturdays. But many of you are out on Saturday afternoons, especially during the summer. So I've decided to make the DisAbility Net on Friday nights at 9 PM EDT, which is 01:00 GMT Saturday morning. Moreover, propagation/communications conditions are far better in the evenings, and we might hear hams from all over the world. I've talked to hams in Eastern Europe and the Middle East at 01:00 GMT.

Therefore, if you're a ham radio operator with a disability, or any ham, please join me and other disabled hams on 20 meters. We'll be meeting each Saturday at 01:00 GMT on 14.272 MHZ for my DisAbility Net. If that frequency is busy, tune between 14.270 and 14.274. We can discuss ham radio, the Internet and everything and anything else you're interested in. Please spread the word about my net and post notices about it wherever you think it may help get the word out.

If you'd like to become a ham radio operator -- despite your disability -- check out the Handi Ham website at www.mtn.org/handiham. Handi Hams can lend you books and tapes on how to become a ham radio operator. You might also check out the American Radio Relay League's website at www.arrl.org. The ARRL publishes many books on ham radio, including QST, which is the international journal of amateur radio.

Finally, please post this message on as many disability lists and disability newsgroups as you can. Send it to your friends, too.

Ian Dury & the Blockheads are back!

Ian Dury has teamed up with the Blockheads again for the first time in 17 years and produced a new CD album, Mr. Love Pants. In the intervening years Ian, a Polio Survivor, turned his hand to acting and has appeared in plays on both stage and television as well as in several film roles. In May of this year he announced he had been diagnosed with colon cancer in 1995 and that the disease had spread to his liver. He decided to release the information the weekend of his 56th birthday, in the hopes of offering encouragement for others battling the disease.

Design Pioneer and Visionary of Universal Design Concept Dies

Ronald L. Mace, FAIA, nationally and internationally recognized architect and industrial designer, died at his home in Raleigh on Monday. He was a design pioneer and the visionary responsible for the concept of universal design, a belief that good design addresses the needs of all people, regardless of their age, ability, or status in life.

Born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1941, Ron contracted polio at the age of nine. He grew up in Winston-Salem, NC and graduated from the School of Design at NC State University in 1966 with a Bachelor's degree in architecture.

After four years of practicing conventional architecture, Ron became involved in the effort to produce the first building code for accessibility in the nation. This code became mandatory in North Carolina in 1973 and served as a model for other states. Ron's pioneering work in accessible design was instrumental in the passage of national legislation prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities, the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988 and The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Ron was President of Barrier Free Environments, Inc., and Principal of BFE Architecture, P.A. in Raleigh. He was also Research Professor in the Architecture Department at the School of Design at NC State University. In 1989, he established the federally-funded Center for Accessible Housing, later renamed The Center for Universal Design, at the School of Design, NC State University. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and received the Distinguished Service Award of the President of the United States in 1992 for distinguished service in promoting dignity, equality, independence and employment of people with disabilities.

Ron was preceded in death by his wife, Lockhart Follin-Mace, the former Executive Director of the Governor's Advocacy Council for Persons with Disabilities, who died in 1991. He is survived by his life-partner, Joy Weeber [reported as Joy Weaver in Raleigh News & Observer], and close personal friend, Leslie Young, both of Raleigh, and his nephew William H. Mace III and his wife, Deborah Brown Mace of Winston-Salem, NC.

A service in the manner of Friends (Quaker) will be held on Friday, July 3 at 2 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on St. Mary's Street in Raleigh. A reception will immediately follow at The Center for Universal Design at 219 Oberlin Road. A memorial service will be held July 19, 1998 at 2 pm in the Grand Ballroom in the Talley Student Center at NC State University.

A national memorial service is being planned for early August in Washington, DC. Contributions may be made to the Ronald L. Mace Memorial Fund to further Ron's vision for the future, c/o The Center for Universal Design, Box 8613, NC State University, Raleigh, NC 27695-86.

Forwarded to the Polio-Life mailing list by Deborah, original author unknown. Also reported in the Raleigh Online Newspaper The News & Observer in article "Creator of 'universal design' concept dies" By Treva Jones, Staff Writer, 1st July 1998.
