COLORADO'S 1998 POST-POLIO CONFERENCE
"FUTURE APPROACHES FOR POLIO SURVIVORS"
August 28-29. 1998
This year, our fifth State Conference brought us 187 survivors from 12
states and one foreign country: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado,
Minnesota, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas, Washington,
Wyoming and Salzburg, Austria. There were sixteen speakers plus 21 exhibitors.
The committee members worked until exhaustion. Special thanks to Woody
Trosper, our Conference chairman, who put in hours and hours getting the
conference ready. This was Woody's first experience putting together a
conference. She fought harder than the French Foreign Legion to solve
the battles of the hotel war and speaker drop-outs. Another special thanks
to Lynda Smeltzer, our Easter Seal liaison, who was there to help through
all the planning stages, and the Easter Seal staff, especially computer
genius Melanie Tomitsch. Todd Lowther, a Vice President at Easter Seals,
and the Clear Creek No Name Band entertained us royally Friday night without
remuneration.
Thank you, all of you who were there, for your patience with our unexpected
obstacles. The conference evaluations were mostly positive, but there
were a few who were not satisfied by the presentations. Our title "Future
Approaches..." was hard to address adequately; partly due to our speaker
problems, but mostly because there are no new drugs or procedures that
can cover the whole spectrum of Post-Polio Syndrome - including what it's
labeled: Post-Polio Sequelae, Post-Polio Muscular Atrophy, the Late Effects
of Polio...
Post-Polio conferences have more going for them beside speaker's expertise
and exhibitor's newest products. Conferences all have polio survivors
who gather together from inside and outside the state. These are the post-polio
experts! These are the people who can, and do, share their knowledge and
experience with anyone who has need of their hard-earned advice. Everywhere
we looked we saw heads together as they advised, listened and learned
from each other.
The Internet has added to our awareness of polio survivors from around
the world. The Internet has amplified the knowledge that we in the United
States have been lucky to live in a country so advanced in medical technology.
We complain about the expense but the knowledge is there. We just need
a less expensive method to tap into the rehabilitation system.
