The site is divided into major sections covering Disorders & Treatments, Professional Resources, Reading Room and Managed Care & Administration. Mental Health Net describes itself as follows:

Mental Health Net was created in September, 1995, as a free service to the worldwide mental health community of professionals and laypeople by John Grohol in close conjunction with John Paton of CMHC Systems. Launched in November, 1995, it has since gone on to become one of the top three premier mental health sites online today, featured in many numerous news stories and capturing all the major Web awards for design and content. It is the most comprehensive source of online mental health resources today. On March 11, 1996, Mental Health Net became a not-for-profit corporation incorporated within the State of Ohio. It is presently forming its Board of Trustees which will oversee continued development and the future of Mental Health Net. This board will be composed of professionals from all the disciplines in mental health, including psychology, psychiatry, social work, and self-help groups.
