International/National/Local Support Organizations
This directory includes individual support groups as well as co-ordinating
organizations. It only covers groups and organizations that have either a web
site or have given their permission for detailed information to be presented
on this web site. Non-appearence of any group or organization here simply means
we are either unaware of their existance or have not as yet approached them
for inclusion in this directory. The latter category is quite large so if you
are unable to locate in this directory a group or organization near you, do
please email us at info@lincolnshirepostpolio.org.uk
as we may be able to help. We don't need your full address details, just your
locality. Bear in mind that we are not experts in geography so please include
any significant centre of population near you as well as your own town and state,
municipality or county.

Washington, D.C.
- The Polio
Society of Washington DC
http://www.poliosociety.org/
was http://www.polio.org/
- In 1982, a group of Washington, D.C. area polio survivors began to meet
regularly to share their experiences and to voice concerns about the lack
of public awareness and national attention on the late effects of polio, as
well as the lack of research being conducted on post-polio's cause(s) and
treatment. Formally established in 1984 as the Post-Polio League for Information
and Outreach, The Polio Society as it is now known, is dedicated to delivering
state-of-the-art medical and other health-related information to the polio
community, their families and friends, and the health care professionals who
serve them. Begun by polio survivors for polio survivors, the Society is committed
to being a voice for the over 650,000 individuals who live with the after
effects of polio today.
The Polio Society was created for the purpose of providing educational resources
and support group services to people who had polio and are now experiencing
the late effects of polio. We are a chartered non-profit organization governed
by a board of directors composed primarily of polio survivors and family members
of polio survivors. Our programs and services are funded by membership dues,
gifts and private contributions.
We continue to publish our magazine Options and the newsletter Options Express. We also host
events.
