This section is in Polio Survior last name alphabetical sequence. Where we have been unable to determine last names, the entries have been added at the end of the list.
The only criteria applied to selection of links for this section of the directory is that the site author should be a polio survivor. These are Polio Survivors who have created their own web sites or pages. They are as diverse in content as Polio Survivors are diverse in character and interests.
"One of my latest pieces published by New Mobility is entitled Searching for Polio. It featured in the August 1997 issue. If you read it, please send me some email and let me know what you think. (I love to get email.)"
Janice Hartman has also written an article Nutrition and Post Polio Syndrome which can be found in the Lincolnshire Post-Polio Library. See the catalogue entry for Hartman, Janice.
"When we say coping, what do we mean? In wood working a common tool is a coping saw. It is so named because it is capable of making intricate curves in fitting pieces of wood together, or one piece coping or fitting with the other. Coping in general means: "Struggling or contending with on fairly even terms or with some degree of success." Synonyms are encounter, struggle, compete, contend, strive, engage, face, confront, hold one's own, manage, hold at bay, combat on equal terms. That is what this book is all about. It is to help you manage or contend with living life as a person with a disability. And I might as well get it off my chest now at the very beginning. I am sick and tired of this so-called political correctness garbage. I am tired of those who wear their feelings on their sleeves hoping someone will make some sort of ethnic, minority group, gender, political, or whatever statement over which they can take righteous offense. If you are one of those people, kindly do me a favor and stop reading, toss this in a waste container, or just pass this book on to someone else who is not wearing his feelings on his sleeve. Do yourself and me a favor by not bothering to write or call me and inform me of my offense."
Robert Lovering, a polio survivor in Phoenix, has spent his entire adult life in a wheelchair and has been a counsellor on disability issues for many years.

Mark O'Brien, an inspirational voice in the movement of disabled people to lead independent lives, died early Sunday morning, July 4, 1999, in his home in Berkeley, Calif. Mr. O'Brien was 49 years old. See Newsbites - 9th July 1999.
John holds the Guinness World Record for being completely dependant on a ventilator for over 40 years. John and Maggie's website has several articles including "The first is 40 Years a layabout!", an autobiographical account by John and two that were written by a friend of theirs, "Each Saving Breath" and "43 Years in an Iron Lung", the latter published in SAGA magazine in November last year. Also, read about John's Freedom Bed, a project that they hope will give John some mobility independance for the first time since he contracted polio in 1955.
