As mentioned before, an information book is available free of charge for Australian health professionals from the Neurological Resource Centre.
By contacting the Neurological Resource Centre you can also obtain a video on the late effects of polio. This video is mainly aimed at people who have obvious residual polio, rather than at people who have mild or moderate signs of the previous disease.
There is a range of services funded by the Commonwealth under the Disability Services Program and through the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service. For example, moderately and severely disabled people and their carers may obtain assistance with particular services under the Home and Community Care Services (HACC) programme.
You can obtain information by contacting your local office of the Commonwealth Department of Community Services and Health. (Look in the telephone book under "Government- Commonwealth".)
The Commonwealth Department of Social Security can provide you with information relating to pensions, benefits and family allowance.
Check with your local Australian Taxation Department Office to see if you can take advantage of any tax exemptions.
The State Departments of Health have different names in each state and territory. You can obtain information regarding local disability policy and available resources, including details on community-based recreation activities. (You will find your state health department in the telephone book under "Government" - your state.)
Practical advice and access to displays of equipment can be obtained from the Independent Living Centres which operate in the following states: ACT, NSW, SA, Vic, WA and QLD. The address and telephone number can be found in the telephone book.
