GOLD IN LIFE'S HOURGLASS

Viola Pahl

GOLD IN LIFE'S HOURGLASS is an autobiography by Viola Pahl. In 1948 she contracted polio and was placed in an iron lung. Complicating matters was the fact that she was in her seventh month of pregnancy. However, she was out of the iron lung before the birth of a fine son. Months of hospitalization still awaited her, and the recovery made has enabled her to be mobile with crutches and wheelchair. The book contains interesting history of the inner city of Vancouver in the 1920s, where the author was raised. It tells of the difficulties encountered by immigrants to Canada - the land of promise - by her husband's family. Although the book will contain religious references due to the fact that Viola's husband Fred is a retired Baptist clergyman, these will not be offensive to non-religious readers. The book depicts Viola's outlook on having a handicap, growing old gracefully, and enjoying life to the full. Interspersed with the tragedy of having polio are stories of fun and humour. You will laugh and you will cry as you read.
