About The Lincolnshire Post-Polio Network

We are Polio Survivors (not Doctors) who, after years of stable functioning following recovery from Polio, are experiencing new deterioration. In most cases these problems have been gradual and medically noted (not explained) over the last 15+ years. Until May 1995 we knew nothing about PPS, and our then Secretary heard the term 'old polio' relating, she was told, to breathing problems being experienced by people who had been in iron lungs. In November 1995 she asked a Consultant could Polio be her problem? The answer that she presented the same symptoms as another patient who had had polio as a child, led her to start searching for more information. In February 1996 radio broadcasts and local news items started to bring together Polio Survivors in Lincolnshire. In late July 1996 - having been put in touch with The Leicestershire Polio Network - some of us decided to form The Lincolnshire Polio Network, later renamed The Lincolnshire Post-Polio Network, to enable us to share information with other networks in the United Kingdom and worldwide.

We occasionally get asked where Lincolnshire is. The Lincolnshire County Council 's web site (left) has a range of information about our county. Although we are listed on their site we currently do not receive any financial support from them in grants or any other form. Lincoln City Council (right) also have an official website with useful information about Lincoln itself.

Our Intentions

To collect and collate Polio and Post-Polio conditions related material from all over the World. This includes but is not limited to Post-Polio Sequelae, Post-Polio Syndrome and the Late Effects of Polio.
To provide the widest possible view by making all the information we collect available regardless of our views as to its content. All research is important.
To disseminate this information to All Polio Survivors by making its existence known and then responding to requests.
To disseminate this information to Medical Professionals, Social Services, DHSS, and other Government Departments.
To campaign for all Polio Survivors to have their new deterioration's and complex medical problems assessed by specialists in Post Polio conditions.

How to become a Member of the Lincolnshire Post-Polio Network.

In making use of the information made freely available on this web site you are already enjoying some of the benefits of membership. That is not part of a scheme to entice you to become a member! We consider it vital that polio survivors and medical professional have easy access to information about post-polio conditions. Our Online Lincolnshire Post-Polio Library and the other resources on this web site will continue to be available free of any charge as part of our campaign to increase awareness and knowledge of post-polio conditions. However, it is only through the continued support of our members that we are able to provide this important service.

As a member of the Lincolnshire Post-Polio Network you will receive four issues of our quarterly newsletter by post, normally some time ahead of the online version. Membership also includes optional subscription to Polio-Network-Lincs, a members-only email discussion list hosted on a Listserv server with built-in virus protection.

THE LINC-PIN Newsletter

THE LINC-PIN is our quarterly Informative Newsletter (pre-2006 published bi-monthly). Production of web editions was suspended in late 2000 but members continued to receive the printed edition via the postal services. As part of the web site rebuild project the 'missing' editions will eventually appear. In the meantime we are making recent editions freely available six months after publication and in PDF format, with images and illustrations set to the best available resolution for printing but nevertheless optimized for fast web viewing.
