| ADDITIONAL NOTES | Warm Springs Reunion Brochures In Mail WARM SPRINGS, Ga. - Over 500 Warm Springs Reunion brochures are already on their way to polio survivors all over the country. Others will be going out each and every day over the next month. Detailing the April 11-14 return of Warm Springs Alumni from the FDR Era and early vaccine years of the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s, the brochures include objectives, the reunion schedule, housing information and a registration form. They are designed to initiate the much- anticipated process of bringing back this unique group in remembrance of a special time and place in all of their lives. "Based on the interest we've had from polio groups and our polio survivors, we're anticipating at least 200 returnees and we're looking forward to a fun and informative reunion," Roosevelt Institute Conference and Continuing Education Director Carolyn Moreland stated recently. "Most of these folks haven't seen or talked to each other in 50 or 60 years and we want to make their reunion as memorable as possible." During the height of the polio epidemic that gripped this nation during the first half of the 20th Century, Warm Springs was home to an average of 125 polio patients at the Warm Springs Foundation, a treatment center started by Franklin Delano Roosevelt (himself a polio victim) in 1927. They came from every state and other nations seeking help and recovery from the dreaded disease, and they included soldiers during the World War II years, many of whom contracted polio while fighting in the Pacific. For every one patient there were at least four staffers, including therapists, nurses, technicians, doctors and possibly the most famous of all, "push boys," young, able-bodied men from the local area responsible for getting the patients to places they couldn't reach on their own. And like the former patients, many staffers of that time are expected. The reunion is the brainchild of Dr. Anne Gawne, director of the post-polio syndrome program at the Roosevelt Institute. The reason for the early spring timing is so that it might be held in conjunction with the annual observance of FDR's death in Warm Springs on April 12, 1945. Georgia Governor Roy Barnes is tentatively scheduled to speak at this year's ceremony at The Little White House. In addition, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, granddaughter of the former, four-term president, will kick things off at a reception at the Historic Therapy Pools, which are now part of The Little White House State Historic Site. For more information on the Warm Springs Reunion, alumni should call 706/655-5231. Information is also available on the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation website at www.rooseveltrehab.org. |

have managed to salvage the Conference, minus the overseas speakers. Dates,
times and venue unchanged. The program has been revamped to turn some workshop
